Variety. Grenache
Winemaking. From the Craven Vineyard in McLaren Flat, this Grenache was hand-picked on the 26th of March '21 from a patch of 120+ year old Grenache vines, fermented with 30% whole bunch, two weeks on skins, then into seasoned French oak for seven months.
Tasting Comment. Our Grenache is quite evocative in style and mouth feel. With notes of raspberries and spice, a hint of pink grapefruit brings loads of fragrant perfume. The palate is textural, almost creamy, laid with loads of flavour and the perfect amount of whole bunch sitting in the background.
Label Concept. One of our favourite parts of making project wines is collaborating with amazing artists. This time we were lucky enough to work with Ana Popescu – a visual artist from France, based in Vienna. Ana applies an almost nostalgic feeling to her very vibrant style and loves to see the beauty in the everyday. For our label, Ana painted the Grenache bush vines from McLaren Flat, with our Coonawarra winery in the background to bring the two regions together.

To run, discover and play. To be brought to life. We are the wines with carefree souls; the wines for now and the wines for later. We are the vibrancy of the terra rossa, celebrating the fruit and honouring the vine.
Our wine-making history dates back to 1844, but it really began with a red sports car in 1945.
It was a collision of hearts and minds, a collision that had been 100 years in the making – refined and distilled from two pioneering winemaking families.
When Reginald Lester Tolley rolled up to a function in his red sports car, Judith Anne Penfold Hyland was suitably impressed by the car and rather taken by the man behind the wheel. Sparks flew, romance blossomed and Penley was conceived (as a business name) in 1947 after Reginald and Judith married.
However, it wasn’t until 1988 that the Penley name came to life, that it finally bore fruit, so to speak. That’s when we (the children of Reginald and Judith) decided to create our own wines – put our label on tradition.
