Coonawarra: The Home of Penley
In the heart of South Australia's Limestone Coast lies one of Australia's most celebrated wine regions — the Coonawarra Wine Region.
Internationally recognised for producing some of the country's finest wines, Coonawarra has built its reputation on a unique combination of climate, geology and generations of winemaking knowledge. For Penley Estate, it is more than a place on the map; it is the foundation of everything we do.
Coonawarra is defined by its famous terra rossa soils — a narrow, cigar-shaped strip of vivid red earth stretching approximately 27 kilometres long and just two kilometres wide. Resting over ancient limestone, these well-drained soils are unlike anywhere else in the world. Combined with a cool maritime influence and long, even ripening seasons, they create ideal conditions for producing wines of balance, structure and elegance.
While the region produces a wide range of exceptional wines, Coonawarra is regarded as one of the world's great homes of Cabernet Sauvignon. Here, Cabernet develops a distinctive regional character — intense dark fruit, fine tannin structure, lifted aromatics and the hallmark notes of mint, herbs and spice that have become synonymous with premium Coonawarra Cabernet.
Alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, varieties including Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay continue to thrive across the region.
At Penley Estate, our connection to Coonawarra runs deep. Every vineyard, every vintage and every bottle begins with a belief that great wine starts in exceptional vineyards. Our winemaking philosophy is driven by understanding the land and allowing the region to express itself naturally. Under the guidance of Winemaker Kate Goodman and the Penley team, we focus on creating wines that reflect the character of Coonawarra rather than masking it — wines with authenticity, precision and a genuine sense of place.
Across Coonawarra, many growers and producers share a commitment to preserving the region's unique landscape and natural resources. Practices such as water management, soil health initiatives, reduced waste and responsible vineyard management help ensure that the qualities which make Coonawarra extraordinary remain protected for years to come.
The story of Coonawarra is ultimately one of place. A place shaped by rich terra rossa soils, ancient limestone, cool-climate influences and a long tradition of winemaking excellence. At Penley Estate, we are proud to be part of that story — creating wines that express the character, beauty and individuality of one of Australia's great wine regions.
